Books

My weekly articles are where I share micro-ideas of how I’m trying to live my best life.

The Shift and other books to come are where I cover a big idea or theme that covers many small ideas.

They are much deeper and have gone through a longer period of reflection.

The Shift

How to Awaken the Aliveness Within

After a devastating family tragedy, I was forced to reexamine my life. Six surprising catalysts helped me rethink my whole life plan. These came from a wide range of sources—from Leo Tolstoy’s seminal classic The Death of Ivan Ilyich to Brené Brown’s TED Talk on Vulnerability.

This self-discovery journey taught me invaluable lessons and helped me identify habits that would be instrumental in helping me focus on my purpose. I am now sharing these habits and more through my new self-help book The Shift.

7 Things that the Book teaches you

  1. Understand what true authenticity means and that you have a unique gift that you must find and nurture.

  2. Learn how to tame the Ego so you can internalize the lessons and experiences that can change your behaviors.

  3. Accept that you are connected to some universal, divine matrix in which we are all somehow linked.

  5. Allow your Emotions to come out and so shift your perspective from knowing to doing.

  6. Start your journey of self-discovery and start to get to know thyself.

  7. Create the goals and habits that can lead to your purpose

As a fellow INTJ on the Myers-Briggs personality scale, I could appreciate and follow the journey that the author took as he “awoke” in his successful career and discovered he wasn’t truly happy and proceeded to embark on a more fulfilling life. This book will help lead your thoughts down a path of self-discovery and understanding to ultimately inspire you to create your own happiness- in whatever that means to you.

I’ve been reading a lot of these self-help style books lately to help figure out my “1/3 life crisis”, if you will. This is absolutely one of the better ones. I found Mo Issa’s personal story of discovery inspiring. After personal tragedy, he decided his life was not what he wanted it to be. It was time for a change. This book was easy to read and had plenty of food for thought.

This is not a how to change your life manual, nor a rule book to follow in order to become a more authentic person. It is simply a guide post, written by a man who is truly wise beyond his years. All of the principles he discusses are to an extent, subject to your own interpretation. After each chapter, I implore you to reflect about your own life and try to understand how each message applies to you.

quote
Mo Issa’s work is full of nuggets of wisdom on developing authenticity and daring to be themselves in a world that revolves around ego, power and money. I love what Issa says in chapter four, “When we understand that we are not our thoughts, that’s half the battle won. When we become aware that our minds are a tool—a factory producing many diverse thoughts, only some of which we are meant to focus on—then we truly internalize this concept.

quote

As a businessman and a corporate animal, I’ve struggled enormously with the authenticity issues, especially coming back home to Ghana. Throughout your book you were talking to me/us, that generation, hitting me/us hard with the real truth. Your style of writing mattered very little to me, it’s your journey, your truthfulness in dealing with issues, and the courage to share with us. Thankyou my brother!

I have read a number of these books and usually get lost in the author’s wordy dialogue. This book was a little different. It was well organized and gave reasons, examples and remedies to those looking to finding purpose in their lives. I appreciated this approach and could see the value in examining your self-motivation to make a shift in your life and to become more aware.
